Reports To:  Supervisor of Maintenance

Work Schedule/FLSA Status:  261 Duty Days/Non-Exempt - 50B

\r\n

 

\r\n

Position Purpose: A skilled Carpenter with knowledge of various carpentry techniques. Individual will be responsible for performing general maintenance of buildings and replacement of deteriorated structural components.  Tasks may involve both rough and finish carpentry.  Limited construction and remodeling jobs will be performed as required.  Duty may include evening shift and/or emergency calls.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:           

\r\n
    \r\n
  • Cut and shape materials to prescribed measurements, using hand and power tools.
  • \r\n
  • Inspect structures and determine needed repairs.
  • \r\n
  • Select specified types of lumber or other building materials.
  • \r\n
  • Maintain tools and equipment assigned.
  • \r\n
  • Repair or replace deteriorated walls, ceilings and sub-flooring.
  • \r\n
  • Repair or replace windows, frames, panels and hardware.
  • \r\n
  • Maintain, repair and replace window closures and actuators.
  • \r\n
  • Repair, replace and install flooring materials.
  • \r\n
  • Adjust, repair and replace ceiling tile and grid.
  • \r\n
  • Perform finish carpentry tasks related to construction and/or repair of school furniture including desks, chairs, tables, bookcases, counters, corkboards, cabinets and picture frames. This may include laminate installations.
  • \r\n
  • Repair or replace physical education equipment such as mat racks, bleachers, and basketball backboard lifting apparatus.
  • \r\n
  • Perform limited construction and remodeling tasks involving alterations/additions to exterior and interior walls, ceilings and floors.
  • \r\n
  • Required to enter time and materials, and technician comments along with other information into a computerized work order system.
  • \r\n
  • Perform trade-related tasks as assigned by the foreman, Maintenance Manager or Supervisor of Maintenance.
  • \r\n
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a preventive and general building maintenance prioritization plan.
  • \r\n
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties:  Performs other related tasks as assigned by manager, foreman, and/or administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment:  Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.

\r\n

 

\r\n

Travel:  Local travel will be required.

\r\n

 

\r\n

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Ability to lift items weighing a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding with tools and equipment weighing a minimum of 30 pounds.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to climb, kneel, stoop, walk and engage in heavy physical activities including exerting force equal to lifting seventy (70) pounds in performance of job-related tasks.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to work in physically restricted areas.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to pass a pulmonary function test.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to pass functional assessment of physical abilities.
  • \r\n

    \r\n
  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • \r\n
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • \r\n
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • \r\n
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • \r\n
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

  • In order for schools and departments to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.

  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • \r\n
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

\r\n
    \r\n
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.
  • \r\n
  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time journeyman experience in the trade.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • \r\n
  • Skills pertinent to positive human relationships with the ability to communicate and work effectively with staff members and community in a multi-cultural setting.
  • \r\n
  • Above average attendance and work performance.
  • \r\n
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills.
  • \r\n
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of personal computers, Microsoft Office software, with work order software preferred.
  • \r\n
  • Experienced with bench tools.
  • \r\n
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information and records.
  • \r\n
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • \r\n
  • Ability to meet District’s insurability requirements
  • \r\n

Terms of Employment:

\r\n

 

\r\n

This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
