Description

The Assistant Director provides administration and management of Fitness, Wellness and Recreational Sports programs for a diverse student body and employees, as a means of actively promoting healthy living and campus engagement.  Many fitness and wellness activities will take place in the Marshall Wellness Center, a 92,000-square foot multi-use fitness and recreation facility that opened in October of 2019.  The Dr. John & Jean Marshall Wellness Center features state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, basketball and volleyball courts, a dance studio, and a 90-yard indoor field turf.

Job Duties

  • Administration and management of fitness, wellness and recreational programs for a diverse student body.
  • Provides aggressive promotion and marketing for all programs for the department.  Coordinate regular updates of the departmental website and manage social media accounts.
  • Provides leadership, supervision, direction, support and guidance to a Program Coordinator responsible for programs that enhance engagement for professional and student staff members.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises student workers who assist with fitness, wellness and recreational activities.
  • Develops, organizes, schedules, and promotes fitness classes for students and college employees; 
  • Develops and promotes educational opportunities, programs, and resources to promote nutrition and healthy living.
  • Recruits and hires instructors for employee and student fitness classes; ensures all paperwork for hire and payment are completed in a timely manner; provides brief orientation to new instructors; provides general oversight and supervision throughout the session; and provides feedback at the end of every semester.
  • Provides fitness education, orientation, and training for students and employees who utilize strength training and cardio equipment and machines.
  • Collaborates with the Employee Engagement and Wellness Specialist (HR) to plan, promote, and facilitate campus-wide employee fitness initiatives and campaigns.
  • Collaborate with other campus entities for cooperative programming opportunities.
  • Ensures continuous quality improvement in all programs and services not only through analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data but also through research and review of best practices; establishes and assesses measurable student learning outcomes, program goals, and objectives; maintains statistical reports, surveys, and other records to assess accomplishments, outcomes, and departmental needs; compiles and analyzes data related to student participation and program evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a background check, have a valid U.S. driver's license and good driving record.
Education:
  • Bachelorâ??s degree required  
Certifications:
  • NSCS, NSCS-CPT, NSCA-CSC, and SCCC preferred.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (or obtained within 60 days of hire).
Experience:
Required:
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in fitness/wellness industry, preferably in a collegiate setting.
  • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disabled backgrounds of community college students.
  • Experience that illustrates a history of successfully collaborating with co-workers on a regular basis to achieve common goals.
  • Experience that demonstrates student-centered decision making and a customer service orientation.
  • Experience that demonstrates a commitment to delivering first-rate customer service and exceptional support on a daily basis.
  • Experience that illustrates the ability to problem-solve, confront policy violators, and diffuse volatile situations.
  • Experience that demonstrates effective management of a staff of young adults/students.

Physical Demands

  • Work occurs in the Marshall Wellness Center and various facilities across campus.
  • Ability to sit or stand or walk for extended periods of time, use hands to operate a computer keyboard, telephone and other basic office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Work includes lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Work includes the ability to navigate stairs in the Wellness Center.
