BCBSNE is happy to offer three work designations for our Omaha area employees: 100% in-office, Hybrid, and 100% remote.
If choosing to work remote, this role can be located in one of the following states: Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Texas.

The Sr Cloud DBA is responsible for leading all aspects of database and database server operations for distributed databases residing on Microsoft SQL Server and/or Microsoft Azure. This role will provide strategic direction and mentorship, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. The Sr Cloud DBA will collaborate with peers, application and data solution development teams, as well as infrastructure, networking, cyber, and support teams to support the delivery and maintenance of high-quality enterprise software solutions. Additionally, this role will influence decision-making processes, drive change, and ensure alignment with organizational goals.

What Youâ??ll Do:  

Database Management: Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of cloud-based database systems 

Query Tuning: Analyze and optimize SQL queries to improve performance and efficiency. Work closely with developers to ensure best practices in query writing. 

Performance Monitoring: Implement and manage performance monitoring tools to track database performance metrics. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks. 

Backup and Recovery: Develop and maintain backup and recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and availability. 

Security Management: Ensure database security by implementing access controls, encryption, and other security measures. 

Capacity Planning: Monitor database storage and compute resources, and plan for future capacity needs. 

Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve database-related issues, including performance problems, connectivity issues, and data inconsistencies. 

Implement and manage FinOps practices to optimize cloud resource usage and costs, ensuring efficient allocation and utilization of cloud infrastructure. 

 

Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, procedures, and performance tuning activities. Implement and enforce standards and policies to ensure consistency, security, and compliance across all database environments.  

Collaboration: Lead and mentor cross-functional teams, including data architecture and engineering teams, system administrators and network engineers, to deliver solutions and drive change in support of our mission. Influence decision making processes and foster a collaborative environment to ensure alignment with organizational goals.  

Qualifications: 

Education: Bachelorâ??s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. 

Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a Database Administrator, with at least 2 years in a cloud environment. 

Technical Skills: Proficiency in SQL and experience with cloud database platforms. Strong knowledge of query optimization and performance tuning techniques. 

Tools: Experience with performance monitoring tools and database management tools. 

Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

Additional Skills: Hands-on Programming/Scripting experience with PowerShell or other scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell). 

Attendance and Timeliness: Consistent and reliable attendance is essential. Must be punctual and able to adhere to a set schedule. 

On-Call Requirements: Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support as needed. Ability to respond promptly to urgent issues during on-call periods. 

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with next-generation data management tools, such as DataLake, DataBricks, and IDMC. Proven ability to adapt to evolving data technologies and contribute to the development and implementation of modern data architectures.  

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Certifications: Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Database - Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or Google Professional Data Engineer. 

 

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Engineering.
  • 7-10 years of relational database administration experience, specifically in MS SQL Server and /or Microsoft Azure.
  • Some experience in working with Storage Area Networks.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted to meet this requirement.
  • The ability to meet or exceed the attendance and timeliness requirements of their departments.
  • The ability to work well in a team environment and be capable of building and maintaining positive relationships with other staff, departments, and customers.
  • Experience with performance tuning, security, scalability, software installation and configuration.
  • Hands on Programming/Scripting experience with PowerShell or other scripting language.
