POSITION TITLE: General Maintenance Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Fleet Maintenance Superintendent

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Responsible for performing minor maintenance and repair tasks associated with light automotive/equipment mechanical work. This position requires on-call availability as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Services light equipment, cars, and trucks with fuel, oil, grease and any other maintenance-related materials.
Performs oil changes and other preventative maintenance tasks.
Repairs and changes tires.
Replaces brakes, lights, batteries, filters, and performs other minor repairs.
Makes service calls and picks up parts.
Performs diagnostics for mechanical/technical problems.
Assists in the maintenance of shop supply inventory.
Assists other mechanics as needed.
Maintains shop work orders and maintenance records; prepares reports on needed repairs.
Participates in the preventative maintenance program for City fleet vehicles and equipment.
Responsible for ensuring the proper and safe performance of repair and maintenance activities on City vehicles and equipment.
Ensures the proper maintenance of tools and equipment by checking and cleaning tools and equipment after use.
Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
Establishes and maintains positive public relations with the general public, other employees, other governmental agencies, and municipal officials.
Attends various mechanical training opportunities to keep informed of the techniques and skills used in maintenance and repair duties.
Physical presence at the assigned job location is an essential function of this role. This position requires onsite attendance during assigned working hours, with remote work arrangements unavailable. Management may consider exceptions under specific circumstances and in accordance with city policies.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Participates in snow removal operations.
Assists in other City activities such as Clean Up Days, Papillion Days, etc.
Assists all divisions and departments as required to accomplish the goals of the Public Works Department and the City of Papillion.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of the major mechanical parts of automotive equipment.
Knowledge and skill in the areas of automotive lubrication, tire changing and repair, and battery charging equipment and procedures.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize hand and power tools necessary to perform automotive maintenance and repair tasks.
Knowledge of and ability to apply precautions necessary to work safely with and around automotive and mechanical equipment in order to promote a safe working environment.
Knowledge of and ability to use a desktop computer, Microsoft Office, and other specialized applications, email, and standard office equipment.
Ability to learn and apply City laws, policies, and regulations that impact repair and maintenance activities.
Ability to learn City responsibilities and ability to use independent judgment in the performance of duties.
Ability to locate and adjust defects in automotive equipment.
Ability to operate vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools pertaining to the duties performed.
Ability to adhere to a preventative maintenance program for City fleet vehicles, equipment, and tools.
Ability to accurately read and interpret maintenance manual instructions.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain various reports and other departmental documents.
Ability to use a personal computer for administrative duties, i.e. timekeeping, online training, etc.
Ability to perform job duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions.
Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Work is generally performed indoors and may occasionally be required in an outdoor setting. Work sites may be dusty and on occasion, hazardous. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Job duties require a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. This position requires the ability to transport oneself to and from various locations throughout the City and Public Works facility.
This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with, or without, assistance and must possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment utilized in upkeep, repair, and maintenance tasks. Must also possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy equipment and tools. Duties require the use of hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, controls; and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also be able to work in small, confined spaces and have the ability to smell. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee works near moving mechanical parts, in precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level is usually intense.
Work may be stressful when dealing with deadlines and working within specified timeframes.
