Make-A-Wish Mission: Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
In 1980, a seven-year-old-boy from Phoenix, named Chris Greicius, realized his lifelong wish to become a police officer. Many of those responsible for fulfilling Christopher’s wish wanted to do the same for other children with critical illnesses, which led to the formation of Make-A-Wish, the largest wish-granting charity in the world with 58 chapters in the U.S. and its territories and 40 international affiliates granting over 375,000 wishes since inception.
The Nebraska chapter was formed in 1983, and since then has granted wishes to over 3,200 children throughout the state, now averaging 110-115 wishes per year. 300+ volunteers help spread and support our mission across the entire state, with our headquarter office in Omaha and satellite offices in Lincoln and Kearney.
Wishes are granted to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and not yet 18 who medically qualify for a wish. Wishes are the driving force behind all we do because, put simply, wish experiences transform lives. A wish is a carefully planned journey, designed to complement a child’s medical treatment, and give them the hope, strength and joy they need to fight their illness. Wishes have proven physical and emotional benefits that can give children with critical illnesses a higher chance of survival. Wishes not only help these children - they also have far-reaching, positive impacts on their families and communities. There are few experiences more powerful than making a wish come true.
