About Habitat Omaha
Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is a nonprofit organization that has built or renovated more than 360 homes with local families in northeast Omaha. Thousands of donors and volunteers have worked together with Habitat Omaha Partner Families to make these homes a reality, building stronger neighborhoods and affecting measurable change in the community.
Our mission
Habitat’s mission is building community through homeownership. Take a quick tour of our mission, methods and current progress. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is one of the nation’s leading residential home builders, having built over 360 homes since our founding in 1984. Homes are built with donor contributions, volunteer labor, and donated materials. The families who partner with us buy their homes with a 0% interest mortgage and are required to work 350 hours of “Sweat Equity” on the home being built. The monthly mortgage payments are used to build more homes.
How Habitat Operates
Habitat Omaha builds new houses and renovates existing houses.
- These houses are modest and affordable.
- Most Habitat houses are located in Northeast Omaha neighborhoods east of 42nd Street.
- Occasionally we are also able to acquire building lots in Southeast Omaha.
- Every two years our Washington County Habitat Committee builds a house in Blair, Nebraska.
- Habitat has over 6,000 volunteers annually.
