Tobacco Prevention Specialist
Position Description

PURPOSE: The Prevention Specialist will assist the CEO and COO by participating in and providing technical assistance within local and state tobacco prevention organizations, coalitions, and special projects. This position is a full-time assignment (provided funding is available) with occasional evening work and some local and state travel.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree preferred. Must have an understanding of and support for primary drug prevention. Experience preferred. Must have management skills and leadership ability and experience, especially within coalition settings. Must have a minimal understanding and competence using basic office equipment. Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to take directions and work independently. Must be able to deal with unpredictable situations and represent PRIDE-Omaha, Inc. in a professional, competent manner.

 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in and provides technical assistance to local and state tobacco prevention coalitions, representing PRIDE-Omaha, Inc., including but not limited to MOTAC, Sarpy County Tobacco Coalition, Tobacco Free Cass County, and the Platte/Colfax County tobacco coalitions.
  • Assists coalitions to increase policies limiting exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Assists coalitions to reduce youth access to tobacco.
  • Assists coalitions with increasing tobacco product placement policies.
  • Distributes tobacco prevention materials and resources.
  • Provides presentations to interested parties, including speaker’s bureau activities on tobacco prevention and “best practices.”
  • Educates and mobilizes grassroots advocates at the local and state level concerning tobacco prevention issues.
  • Provides technical assistance on media advocacy and social marketing techniques to local and rural coalitions and/or youth groups targeting tobacco prevention issues.
  • Participates in special tobacco prevention opportunities/events as they are identified and as time permits.
  • Assists the CEO and COO in planning and developing long-range tobacco prevention goals, grants, and initiatives.
  • Assists coalitions and PRIDE-Omaha, Inc. to increase capacity by recruiting and training volunteers.
  • Assists staff by answering the telephone and assisting the public when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the CEO and COO.
